Cycling in the Netherlands
Client: CycleCity Guides
This map is one of a large series of maps produced by Merritt Cartographic for inclusion in a guidebook, published by CycleCity Guides, focusing on a cycling tour of the Netherlands. This map shows an overview of the routes described in more detail throughout the remainder of the book. The maps highlighting the individual routes in greater detail were generated at street level scale and all the maps in the book were produced with data from the OpenStreetMap project.
A subtle colour scheme has been used on the background map, allowing the the routes themselves to be more easily identified. Being produced for the cyclist, this map also highlights the main rail network within the Netherlands. Topographical shading has been avoided so as not to distract attention away from the routes and other information.
A bright red was chosen as the colour to highlight the route. Perhaps an obvious choice, it would show up against the background map more successfully than any other colour. The numbers shown on the inset maps represent distances from the start of each route and also correspond to information given in the written text.
