The topographical shading used on this map shown in greater detail.
Another section of the map, the region around Innsbruck in Austria, shown at a larger size.
This is in an adapted version of a map produced for a book covering the topic of mountaineers. As such, the most important consideration when designing the map was to ensure that the regions mountainous landscape was clearly evident. A relatively simple colouring scheme has been chosen so as not to distract attention away from the topographical information.
The light source used by the software in the process of shading the topography on this map was set so as to be positioned looking directly down on to the landscape (i.e. at 90 degrees to the horizon line). As well as adding emphasis to the ridges and valleys within the region, this decision was made primarily so that there would be no distracting shadows cast across the map.
Data from the following sources were used in the compilation of this map: Shuttle Radar Topography Mission: NGA/NASA; VMAP0: NIMA.
